Nurses heckled health secretary Andrew Lansley as he claimed NHS staff numbers had increased.
Mr Lansley was branded a ‘liar’ at the Royal College of Nursing’s annual conference as he claimed there were now 3,000 fewer nurses but 4,000 more doctors than in 2010.
The Tory minister was also laughed at when he told the audience they had a responsibility to speak out if they had ‘a view that staffing levels are literally not safe for patients’.
His address came after an RCN study showed 26,000 health service posts had gone in the two years to April, out of a total of 61,000 at risk.
