Andrew Lansley is on course for another dispute with health unions after reportedly backing plans to introduce regional pay for NHS workers.
The government has already clashed with unions over pensions and its controversial NHS reform programme, but a new battleground appears to be developing after it emerged the health secretary supports proposed changes to the way salaries are calculated.
Official documents seen by the Observer show the Department of Health favours introducing a structure that would see the level of wages determined by the standard of living in the local area.
